STYLES OF CARPET

FRIEZE

This style is generally short in height and has a tight twist. Short friezes also wear really well. Longer styles can have a tendency to lay down or mat due to the pile height.

BERBER

This is a looped carpet that has flecks of color added to the yarn. These loops can be similar in size or mixed height. Berbers with tighter loops will resist matting faster than larger looped ones.

PLUSH

This style is generally thicker and feels good under foot. It will typically show lines when you are vacuuming.

PATTERN

This styles is generally made of cut and looped carpet. This creates the patterns that many of you have seen. Traditional floral patterns and contemporary pin – dots are very common. This style also wears well due to its compact construction.


TYPES OF FIBERS CARPET IS MADE FROM

NYLON

This is the most frequently used carpet fiber. It is highly desirable due to its exceptional durability, versatility, and reasonable pricing. It can be dyed in an endless variety of colors and made into numerous styles and textures. Nylon is commonly used in residential and commercial carpets. It comes branded or unbranded.

P.E.T. & PTT

This is types of polyester. It is commonly used in residential and a few commercial applications; polyester has good color clarity, colorfastness, and natural resistance to water-soluble stains. It is usually softer to the touch. PTT offers increased durability that rivals nylon.

OLEFIN

This is a type of polypropylene. It resists fading, generates low levels of static electricity, is favorably priced, and can be engineered in outdoor applications. Due to its manufacturing process, polypropylene inherently resists stains. When used in specific carpet constructions, this yarn will perform as well as most resilient fibers. The fibers will crush and hold the shape over time, so you will want to pick one with a tight, low pile height to achieve the best wear over time.

WOOL

The most expensive of the fibers listed here, it is a natural fiber with moderate soil and stain resistance. It is durable and is soft to the touch.

Q: What makes a good quality carpet?

A: The density, the twists of the fibers, and the thickness is what determines the quality of carpet. Density refers to how tightly packed the fibers are. As far as twists are concerned, the tighter the better. The thickness is the ounce weight of the pile. A combination of density, twist, and thickness determines the quality of the carpet.

Q: Do carpets come with any stain treatments?

A: Yes. Almost all carpets are treated with some sort of stain resister (Scotchguard, Stainmaster, etc.), at manufacturing. Keep in mind; even though a carpet is stain resistant, no carpet is completely stain proof. Some carpets are more stain resistant than others. Polyester and solution dyed carpets are inherently stain resistant due to their chemical makeup.

Q: What do warranties cover?

A: Stain warranties are usually limited to food stains, which are not heat set. Wear warranties ensure that your carpet will not pack down more than 10% per year. The chances of having to file a claim on your warranty are very slim. They are there to give you the assurance that you are buying a quality product. For the most part, if you feel that your carpet is doing something that is abnormal, you need to let us know.

Q: What is the difference in pads?

A: The pads are listed by their density (in pounds) and thickness. The density tells you the quality. A 7 lb. pad is better for your carpet than a 6 lb., and an 8 lb. is better than a 7 lb. The manufacturers recommend at least a 6lb. pad. The thickness depends on the type of carpet you are buying. If you are getting a commercial or berber carpet, you want a pad that is 1/4 ” or 3/8“. For cut pile carpets, 1/2 ” or 7/16” is recommended.  Memory Pad is the premium pad and will resist breaking down over time. It also usually comes with a moisture barrier that prevents liquids from soaking into the pad.

Q: How do I figure out square yardage?

A: Multiply the width of the roll (usually 12 feet) by the length that you need, and divide that by nine. For example a 12 foot by 100 foot roll would go like this: 12 x 100 = 1200 / 9 = 133.33 square yards.
